The Cockburn park will boast an impressive pool the size of Optus Stadium, capable of generating 30 different different wave types, allowing surfers to optimize their training in focused sessions.
“What the Perth Wave Park will produce is consistent waves of such high quality that athletes will be able to do (all the training they need) within a 45-minute session,” Surfing’s chief executive said WA Mark Lane.
The $100 million facility will be able to accommodate up to 80 surfers at a time, catering to people of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros.
The park took 10 years to get off the ground, with opposition to the first proposed site in Melville.
The Cockburn site is also controversial. Conservationists say the land that will have to be cleared is a feeding ground for endangered black cockatoos.
But developer Aventuur defended the location.
“We’re very pleased that it’s the right location and we’re doing the right thing to take care of the environment as well,” said chairman and chief development officer Andrew Ross.
Perth Surf Park is expected to be completed by mid-2026 and open to the public later that year.
