Police are investigating the death of a north Queensland woman as a homicide.

A man was arrested almost two hours after the woman was found with life-threatening injuries at a home in Miguel, about 100km south of Cairns, about 4.15pm.

Emergency teams tried to help the woman, but she died on the spot.

A man allegedly left in a vehicle before police arrived.

At 4:30 p.m., the same car collided with a truck on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket.

The driver of the truck was not injured, and the man in the vehicle fled to a nearby area, police said.

Part of the highway was closed while officers searched for the man who allegedly tried to steal a car from another woman nearby.

Shortly after 6 p.m., the 51-year-old man was discovered and detained.

The police said that the arrested man and the dead woman knew each other.

Residents and motorists were still advised to avoid the Bruce Highway area while police investigated.

A police spokesman said there was no further threat to public safety.
