“Will you set me on fire?” Baz Luhrmann he asks when Georgia Godworth, a comedian who interviews strangers on the street, stops him in Sydney to ask about his love life.
“I think you have to put the camera down – I think it’s there,” says the acclaimed Australian director as he, well, directs Godworth’s shots TikTok Vox Pop.
Godworth, not knowing who he’s talking to, replies, “Yes, that’s good, take the light, take the angles.”
She begins by asking Luhrmann if he’s single—he has, of course, been married to Australian costume designer Catherine Martin for nearly 30 years—and he replies, “No … I’m married.”
Godworth later moves the interview to a Newtown street to, um, group sex. But before that, Luhrmann offers some thoughtful reflections on long-term commitment and love.
“Throughout this marriage journey, me and the person I’m married to have found our own really true and authentic concept of what our contract with each other should be,” says the 61-year-old.
“But I think more importantly, marriage isn’t so much about what exists between you and another person as it is about advertising to other people that you love and care about the deal.”
Love, respect and communication, Godworth riffs. Luhrmann goes on to say that if you care about someone and they fall in love with someone else, “there has to be some form of acceptance.”
“It’s a communication contract.”
Godworth notes, “It’s a loose contract where you get to knock other people from time to time. Monogamy is hard in the long run and you know people come into your life?’
Luhrmann, who appears to be on a night out, interrupts: “Let me think about it. I’m not sure what that means.
Godworth continues, “Sometimes you can have an open dialogue, whether it’s a threesome, a foursome, an orgy.”
Luhrmann then asks the interviewer, “How many quads have you done?”
“Maybe around six,” she replies, before Luhrmann says, “So, I mean, what’s the point of the conversation we’re having?”
The fusion of the famous director – whose work includes The Great Gatsby, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge – and a young, relatively unknown Newtown street comedian provides two minutes and 18 seconds of part-sarcastic, part-heartfelt entertainment.
The video was published in Godworth’s TikTok on May 30 and had amassed 100,000 views by Friday.
Godworth spoke with Luhrmann in March—her first time trying the street interview format.
“I was nervous and a bit rushed,” she told Guardian Australia on Friday.
When Godworth stopped Luhrmann, she thought he was “dressed smart.” She didn’t learn it was the famous director until a month later, when she posted a snippet of the interview on TikTok in early April and her best friend called “to tell me who he is.”
“Moulin Rouge was my favorite movie as a kid and I really love Romeo + Juliet,” Godworth said. “I see him as an icon – I just didn’t recognize him!”
Godworth believes Luhrmann “knew I didn’t know who he was” but “volunteered anyway”.
When Luhrmann reframed to improve the lighting, the TikToker thought, “this guy has authority.”
“He knows what he wants and I respect that,” she recalled thinking at the time. “I had fun with him. It had personality and charm. His warmth and spontaneity was really fun.”
As the interview ends, Luhrmann says in the video, “I don’t usually do interviews, so I’m glad to be a part of yours.” Godworth replies, “Thank you very much. I’m honored, I’m honored.” Final scene.
