A father is lucky to be alive after he was stabbed while chasing suspected thieves in north Adelaide early this morning.

Police received reports of two men breaking into cars at Gonis Speedway in Evanston Gardens before 2:15 a.m.

The 42-year-old father told 9News he woke up to a noise and decided to confront the couple.

“I put on some shorts and went out and when I came out I yelled at them, ‘What the hell are they doing?'” he told 9News.

“They freaked out and took off in different directions.

One of the men, who was armed with a pair of scissors, ran down Seabrook Street to escape.

The father chased him and was attacked and stabbed in the back.

“Eventually he rolled over and stabbed me several times. I just felt the two punctures near the spine on my back,” he said.

He said he lost blood as he limped back home and collapsed in his hallway.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and took the father to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

“I could have ended up dead. If they had hit the right spot, I could have been in a wheelchair permanently, paralyzed,” he said.

“It’s scary to think how close I could have been.

Police said they searched the area for the two men but were unable to locate them.

Witnesses reported that the couple fled the scene.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
