Cristiano Ronaldo here he is doing a completely different part to his teammates in Portugal training. Read into that what you will.
The respect for Luka Modric is genuine. And rightly so.
Preach, Scholes.
Mbappe is ready to return to France despite the “obstructive” mask
The two games from 17:00 today are Holland v Austria and France v Poland. Both should be highly watchable. All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe and whether he starts – with a protective mask – for Les Bleus.
said Didier Deschamps the swelling on Mbappé’s broken nose had gone down. The France coach said his captain was “in a hurry to go” despite the injury.
“The reason he wears the mask is to protect his face in case certain cases arise,” he said. “Maybe it gets in the way, but it’s something you have to get used to.” It’s like when you have 3D glasses, but now we have masks that are quite thin, as thin as possible.”
That’s all finePeter, except for Joe Gomez on the left wing.
On emailPeter Tomlin has some fresh suggestions for Southgate…
I really don’t understand all the criticism of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Indeed, he was the only creative player in the England team in the first 2 matches, let alone the warm-up matches!
In the Sebia game he created a great chance for Walker, he played countless balls to Saka in both games, including the one he headed, he created far more than any other player, he is a threat from free kicks and corners, he progressed more than anyone else, etc., etc.
When he was taken out in the last game, we didn’t create anything. Gallagher has a lot of energy, but where will that get us? I’m really concerned about tonight’s game. Even the Guardian gave [TAA] a score of 4 out of 10 for the last game despite the fact that he was our best midfielder!
He is criticized for losing the ball twice. On one of those occasions he got the ball back! When Guehi did, he was praised for his recovery. Kane gave the ball and cost us a goal, Stones gave the ball twice on the edge of the area, so did Trippier. I’m not saying Trent was outstanding, but, Walker and half a game for Bellingham, he was probably the best of the poor. I would look elsewhere to make changes.
Trent should be RWB with Walker, Stones & Guehi in the middle and Gomez at LWB, Bellingham, Rice & Foden across midfield, Kane & Saka up front.
Will someone please agree with me?
Wayne Rooney is absolutely ubiquitous right now, isn’t it? And sorry Wazza, I love you, but that England XI just isn’t going to happen.
Speaking of England v Slovenia, here’s your decorator from Cologne as the Three Lions seek to respond to the fierce criticism that has come their way in recent days. (Didn’t you notice?)
Never heard of Timmy Max Elsnick? Ben Fisher has done his homework on the Slovenia player who could be a thorn in England’s side tonight.
Gallagher’sBen Duxbury connects by email:
Do you think Southgate hopes Gallagher is the modern equivalent of Hargreaves under Sven? There is a lot of running and it allows the better players to do the exciting stuff like passing and scoring goals.
As an eternal England optimist, I’d like to think so, Ben. They need someone to, in the words of former Manchester United player Fred, carry the piano for the artists to play.
Everyone loves a fan zone at a major tournament. And The Guardian’s own Ed Ahrens stepped right into the mixer to get a feel for Germany’s fan zones in 2024, a place where supporters without match tickets can soak up the atmosphere.
So it looks like it will be Conor Gallagher providing an injection of energy and work ethic into the England midfield tonight. As critical as people are of Southgate for such a change, England need a huge improvement in their pressing and the Chelsea man will help there. Kobbie Mainoo might have been the quicker selection, or perhaps Jude Bellingham stepping into the No.8 role, but Gallagher did well twice off the bench.
Here’s the Guardian extract about it, from ours complete guide for every player at Euro 2024:
Thanks Michael. What a dramatic night we had at this wonderful tournament. I’m sure the excitement will only continue with England in action tonight…
My blog stint is over. I will now turn it over to Dominic Booth. Cheers!

British police said there were no arrests and no reports of disorder last night when 10,000 England fans gathered in the center of Cologne ahead of the match with Slovenia.
The scenes around the Heumarkt were lively throughout the day and around 10pm the streets were packed with young fans drinking, cheering and singing songs about the Scots. But in an atmosphere that would have seemed unlikely a generation ago, the crowds were filled with families as well as tourists trying to join in (and capture the proceedings on camera).
The UK’s Football Policing Unit said the experience was “indicative of what we have seen in Germany so far, with the vast majority of English fans extremely well behaved”.
Lamine Yamal, the ad is real. Only played 20 minutes for Spain against Albania last night but made a real difference when he came on.
All the noise from the England camp are suggesting that Conor Gallagher will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield against Slovenia, and these fresh quotes from Declan Rice on 5Live this morning only seem to reinforce that theory. Rice played with Gallagher in Chelsea’s youth teams before moving to West Ham. The quote about Rice “feeling safe and secure” with Gallagher is mildly interesting, it could be that he doesn’t feel the same way with TAA.
I’ve played with Gallagher at academy level, played against him at Palace and Chelsea. He is a teammate I would love to have on my team, he works well, you feel so safe and secure there with him. I think he’s surprised so many people this year with his ability on the ball, how he gets forward with it, how he gets into the box, scores goals. I think he’s a really positive player and he’s performed so much over the last few years that you can really see in yourself how confident he is.
Every time I get to play with Kon, it hasn’t been much, I’ve really enjoyed it because I know him very well as a person, I know his family very well and he’s a lovely boy and it’s another great chance to stamp our mark.
It was the goal that did it for Croatia. Quite a strike.
I’m not sure there ever was more desperate man of the match photo.
However, there was a pretty good moment in the post-match press conference.
Meanwhile, the memes are rolling.
Preamble
The morning after the night before. Croatia and Italy fans will wake up in Leipzig with very different hangovers. Croatia came within a minute or two to overtake their opponents in second place in Group B, but in the end a Mattia Zaccani screamer in the 98th minute meant it was the Azzurri who joined Spain in the last 16 .
Spain top the group with nine points, five goals scored and none conceded. Albania finish bottom and, despite having their moments and a raucous set of fans, are out Euro 2024. Here’s how things went in Group B.
Croatia are not yet out as they still have faint hopes of qualifying as one of the four best third teams in the six groups. But for just two points, they need a very specific set of results to be one of those teams.
Portugal will beat Georgia
Turkey to beat the Czech Republic
England to beat Slovenia by three or more goals
Denmark beat Serbia
According to UEFA, the four best third-placed teams in the six groups are determined in the given order according to the following criteria:
1) More points
2) Goal difference
3) Goals scored
4) More wins
5) Lower disciplinary record
6) Position in the general ranking of the European qualifications
Many of these outcomes do seem likely, but as anyone who has ever installed a battery, these things rarely happen all at once.
That was yesterday, this is today. We have a whopping four games for you today, each a potential cracker.
France v Poland (17:00 BST)
Netherlands vs Austria (17:00)
Denmark v Serbia (20:00)
England v Slovenia (8pm)
“FOUR games Jeremy. This is crazy”.
