A man died when a fire ripped through a semi-detached house in outback New South Wales on Monday morning.

It was only then that firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW were able to gain access to the residence where they found the man’s body in the bedroom.

“He has not yet been identified but is believed to be the occupant, aged in his 70s,” NSW Police said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but police have been told it “may have started in the fireplace” and specialist investigators will examine the scene on Monday.

“The home did not appear to have smoke detectors installed,” police said.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
